The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity History

The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity was founded in 1984 with the aim of raising the necessary funds to build a dedicated Children’s Cancer and Haematology Unit at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

At this time, children diagnosed with cancer and complex blood disorders were treated alongside general patients who at times, could have had potentially contagious and infectious conditions, which was not only unsuitable, but also potentially very dangerous in terms of potential infection.

On 23rd October 1987, the Children’s Cancer Unit opened its doors, thanks to the determination and hard work of the charity’s founding members and supporters.

Today, The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity continues to support the work of the Unit, helping to fund vital resources, staff and specialised care, equipment and infrastructure and contributing to research and a range of family support services to support children and young people living with cancer and their families throughout Northern Ireland.
