Our partnership with Queen’s University School of Nursing and Midwifery is now in its third year and we are excited to see our third set of International Nursing Programme winners currently preparing to leave for their once-in-a-lifetime trip to Atlanta on Monday 22nd September.
We were delighted to meet this year’s worthy winners, Katie Clarke, Rochelle McTeague and Sarah Wellington and find out a little more about their hopes for the programme and their plans while in Atlanta.
During their trip, they will visit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare, a national leader in childhood cancer, haematology, and blood and marrow transplant programs, serving infants through to young adults. The three students will also have the opportunity to visit Emory University where they will gain a unique insight into what Nursing student life is like in America.
The girls were selected for the Programme following a rigorous application and interview process and during this time, all three demonstrated their passion for the care of children and young people and their particular interest in haematology and oncology nursing.
Julie Brown, Senior Lecturer from the School of Nursing and Midwifery commented:
“Katie, Rochelle and Sarah are all exceptional students who exemplify the values of children and young people’s nursing and we feel they will be fantastic ambassadors for CCUC, QUB and nursing in Northern Ireland.”
Jane Hoare, Chief Executive at The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity added:
“As well as our ongoing day-to-day support of the Children’s Cancer Unit, we put a lot of work into future planning, in particular the future of patient care. We are committed to supporting the future workforce here in Northern Ireland and to ensuring that we retain and equip as many future nurses as possible so that children and young people continue to receive the best possible treatment and care. Funding the CCUC International Nursing Programme, and indeed the broader partnership with the QUB School of Nursing and Midwifery, allows us to offer students a deeper understanding of and exposure to paediatric Oncology nursing so that following graduation, they may consider a career in this area.
“We wish the girls and the team from QUB the very best of luck during their trip and are looking forward to hearing all about it when they return.”
