What is the Robotics Programme?

This programme is an exciting and innovative initiative to help combat social isolation and support the educational needs of young patients receiving treatment for cancer or blood disorders.

Children and young people living with cancer will often experience prolonged disruptions to their school attendance due to symptoms of illness, health risks associated with public interaction and effects of treatment. The Robotics Programme, funded and delivered by The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity, involves the use of telepresence robots to enable children to get back into the classroom and stay connected with their schoolwork and, more importantly, their friends.

Who can access the Robot?

To be eligible for a robot, your child will:

• Have a cancer/blood disorder diagnosis.
• Be expected to be out of school for an extended period (6 months +).
• Be unable to attend school in person (assessed by medical professional).
• Have a commitment from their school to participate and support programme.
• Have a nominated parent/guardian to supervise use of robot throughout duration of the programme.

How does the Robot work?

The robot, which is controlled by the child from the comfort of their own home or hospital bed, sits in school – essentially taking the child’s place in the classroom – and uses a live video link to offer the next best thing to being there in person.

Depending on how the child is feeling, the robot can be used for the entire school day or during specific times or classes.

How do I access a Robot?

Speak to your Consultant, Specialist Nurse or Social Worker to see if a robot would be an appropriate aid in supporting your child’s educational needs. They will make an assessment and if required, make a referral to The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity.

If approved what next?

The medical staff making the referral will contact The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity on vour behalf, sharing your details so they can get in touch with you. After explaining how the robot works to your family and demonstrating at home, the charity will also engage with the school and arrange to introduce the robot to the classroom.
