As part of our commitment to supporting the Children’s Cancer Unit and enhancing the care that children and young people receive during their treatment, we support the team in a range of ways including continuous learning and development.
Recently we were delighted to provide funding for ten members of the team, including Nursing staff, Consultants, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, to attend the annual CCLG conference. The event, which took place on 24th and 25th March in the International Conference Centre in Birmingham, is the UK’s leading professional conference for all those working within paediatric and TYA oncology.
During the conference, the team had access to two days of essential updates on best practice excellence and cutting-edge research in children and young people’s cancer in the UK, with a wide range of multidisciplinary, research and clinical insight sessions and networking opportunities.
More than 700 delegates attended each day and the team from the Children’s Cancer Unit joined their peers to share news and discoveries in children’s and young people’s cancer. They heard engaging presentations from key leaders in cancer research, treatment and care as well as sessions on how genetics are revolutionising CYP cancer care, integrating quality improvement with service development, palliative care for teenagers and young adults, ethical challenges, and transforming care and enhancing support.
This year’s keynote speaker was Professor Kevin Fong, a BBC broadcaster, consultant anaesthetist and Professor of Public Engagement & Innovation at University College London Hospital. Prof Fong, who also works as a helicopter emergency medical service doctor with Air Ambulance and was seconded to NHS England as National Clinical Advisor in Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response for COVID-19, will give a thought-provoking talk titled, ‘Medical error and learning from mistakes: How to fail’.
Clinic Nurse Specialist, Susie McGeown commented on the opportunity:
“I feel very lucky to have been able to attend the CCLG conference this year. It was great to hear all the recent updates from across the centres in the UK. Some of the highlights for me included discussions about ambulatory care (care and treatment that may be able to be provided at home), supportive care for anticipatory nausea and vomiting through the psychological and multi-disciplinary team. Thank you to CCUC for providing the funding to enable my colleagues and me to attend this really valuable and insightful conference.”
